This order is spread widely throughout the world, present on all continents except Antarctica. Many species habituate caves and crevices, favourable microclimates which allow them to tolerate regions that might otherwise be too hot or cold, hence they can be found from the tropics to quite high latitudes.


As a generalisation the Zygentoma favour warmer latitudes than the Archeaognatha, however many species, such as the ubiquitous Silverfish are highly synanthropic, their close association with mankind making this a common species in human habitation throughout much of the world
